amplified hearing?

I snap my head back; left right left: nothing. Only faint, almost imperceptible shadows, smoothly drifting tantalisingly out of reach. I should have gotten used to it by now. Muted sounds, like my mother’s noiseless gait. (Your eyes suddenly snap open; turn your head and she’s inches away from your neck. Was it sound? Her breath on the back of my neck? Your heart jumps, skips a beat. You guiltily cover up whatever it is you’re doing. And yet you know the omniscience inherent in her.)

But come back here. Tell me who you are, why you’re skulking in the shadows, noiselessly lurking around in the wings. How many of you are here? Why won’t you talk to me?
